Pino Palladino Mini Style File
Posted by Johnny Copland in Lessons - Style Files on March 27, 2010
Here’s a look at Pino Palladino’s Main Riff and a couple of his brilliant trademark fills on the D’angelo track ‘Brown Sugar’, from a live set in Stockholm.

Main Riff:
“Brown Sugar” was on D’angelo’s debut album. This version is from a live show in 2000. The main riff is based on Bm7 one bar, then to Em7. The 16ths are swung so make sure they groove and the part’s played with a relaxed laid back feel.
Fill # 1:
A bluesy fill up at the dusty end of the neck. Uses the 5th, 6th, root and then the flat 3rd of Bm bent up.
Fill # 2:
A swinging fill based on a Bm11 arpeggio, starting on the 11th and then going down. You could also think of this as F#m7 over B. I slide the D to C#.

On Tour with ‘Thriller Live’
Posted by Johnny Copland in Tour Diary on March 17, 2010
In Jan and Feb I was out on tour playing bass for the Michael Jackson musical ‘Thriller Live’ round Europe. We started in Vienna and covered a lot of Germany. Snow everywhere and a different kind of cold to the UK, but great scenery, cities and people! Here’s a quick peek behind the scenes…
Kieron Garrett Quartet
Posted by Johnny Copland in Live Clips on March 4, 2010
I was up playing at the Stratford Upon Avon Jazz club with the Kieron Garrett Quartet at the weekend. Kieron’s just finished his debut album and his band’s going to be out promoting it as much as possible in 2010.
Haven’t seen any clips surfacing on YouTube from Sunday yet, so for now here’s a clip of my solo on Kieron’s tune “Beans” from a gig in Jul 2009 featuring top London Tenor player Dave O’Higgins on sax. Thanks also to football legend Dion Dublin for his amazing ‘Weather Report’ & ‘Yellowjackets’ chat after the Stratford gig!
